Thousands of New Zealanders have stepped up to the retirement they’ve always wanted with Staircase. The success stories in this section are all based on actual customer experiences but we’ve changed their names and photos for privacy purposes.

Jo, Epsom

Jo, Epsom

My husband and I owned our own home and a rental property, both mortgaged. As small business owners we had no superannuation scheme.

We knew we needed to do something more for ourselves to prepare ourselves for retirement.

With Staircase's help, over a five-year period we were able to purchase another three properties, bringing our home ownership up to one privately owned home and four rental properties. We were able to keep these properties for another five to eight years and then as we reached retirement age we have sold them and banked the capital gains. We now have the money invested long term and are able to live off the interest it provides.

Without Staircase's help we would not have been able to achieve such a lot of house buying and would not have the funds that we do have to retire.

Tom, 35

Tom bought his first home – the flat that he was renting – after five years of serious saving. Another five years of putting all his spare cash into mortgage payments got him to the point where he was able to invest in a new-build rental property through Staircase. Tom has owned a two-bedroom rental in Christchurch for 18 months now and jokes that his tenants have it WAY better than him! Tom’s goal? Retire at 50 and sail around the world.

Lee and Sue-Yin moved to Auckland from Korea 10 years ago and immediately bought a home for themselves and their three children. Lee heard about Staircase from a work colleague and within 6 months the couple had invested in their first new-build rental property in Tauranga. Lee keeps a close eye on property values and in the eight years since then the couple has decided to add three more homes to their Staircase portfolio. Now that their oldest child is approaching university age, they are thinking about selling one to fund her studies.
