Definition

A dispute resolution process where the conflicting parties present their case to an independent arbitrator (or panel), who then makes a binding decision. It's an alternative to going to court. In NZ, arbitration is often used in commercial contract disputes or construction contracts, and the Arbitration Act 1996 governs the process.
